Sept. 9 is National Teddy Bear Day, and we’re celebrating the incredible Bear in a Chair program at Riley Children’s Foundation.

Thanks to our friends at Speedway, special Riley bears are placed in classrooms to hold a student’s seat while they receive extended care at Riley Children’s Health. It’s a powerful reminder that they’re still part of their school community – even when they’re away.

Recently, Riley kid Ben had a bear delivered in his classroom at Barr-Reeve Elementary School in Montgomery, Indiana. Ben’s journey with Riley began this past May when he was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. Since then, Ben has had multiple inpatient chemo stays, lab visits, imaging appointments, and countless hours at the hospital.

“While no family ever wants to face childhood cancer, we are beyond grateful that Ben is receiving care at Riley—it truly is the best place for children in need of medical attention, big or small,” said Nicole, Ben’s mom.

A proud New York Yankees fan for years, Ben named his bear “Judge” after Aaron Judge. The family receives photos of all of Judge’s adventures at school, including trips to the library, lunch and recess.

“Having the Bear in a Chair in Ben’s classroom has been such a gift for both him and our family. It gives Ben a sense of comfort knowing his seat is being saved for him while he focuses on treatment, and it reassures him that he’s still very much part of his classroom community.”
