Meet our 2023 Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Indiana Champion
Each year, 170 Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals across North America identify a “Champion” in their community to serve as the face for children treated at their local hospital. Riley Children’s Health is the only CMN hospital in Indiana.
Before Lucy Beyers was born, she was diagnosed with heterotaxy, which impacts the arrangement of internal organs, and malrotation of the intestines. Lucy spent her first seven months of life at Riley Children’s, where she underwent three surgeries including open heart surgery. Two years ago, Lucy underwent surgery for a pacemaker, and she feels better than ever.
Lucy is hardworking, creative, and a natural leader. She shares her story at Riley Dance Marathons and celebrates her birthday in December by raising money for Riley through a hot chocolate stand. We checked in with Lucy to find out how her year as a CMN Hospitals Champion is going.
What has been your favorite part about being a 2023 CMN Hospitals Champion?
All the fun events I’ve gotten to attend.
Why is it important to you to give back to Riley?
Riley saved my life and so many others. We need to continue to give so they can keep saving more children.
What would your perfect day look like?
A day at the beach and spotting some dolphins!
What do you want to be when you grow up?
A heart nurse or a heart doctor at Riley.
If someone was thinking about making a donation to Riley, what would you say to encourage them?
I would say that without Riley and the doctors, I wouldn’t be here today. We need people to give because medicine and treatments are always changing.
