New Leader for Riley's Growing Heart Center

Riley Hospital for Children’s rapidly advancing cardiology division has a new leader. Larry Markham, M.D., MSCR, is the new Division Director of Pediatric Cardiology at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and the new co-director of the Pediatric Cardiovascular service line at Riley. Dr. Markham, who began his role on February 1, succeeds Randall Caldwell, M.D., who will remain a member of the cardiology team. Since 2007, Dr. Markham has served in cardiology at Vanderbilt University and Monroe Carell, Jr. Children’s Hospital. Dr. Markham calls his new position, “the opportunity of a lifetime.”

“We recruited Dr. Markham for his expertise in congenital heart disease in children, adolescents and young adults,” explains Wade Clapp, M.D., the Chair of Pediatrics for IUSM. “We are also confident in his ability to partner with other leaders in a large, multi-disciplinary cardiac program that spans the entire state of Indiana.”

Recent advancements for the Riley Heart Center include:

• A prestigious three-star ranking from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons―an achievement made possible in part through donors’ support of outcomes data tracking;
• Increased integration of the Wells Center cardiovascular genetics research team into the care plans for patients and family members;
• The addition of a fourth cardiothoracic surgeon, Jeremy Herrmann, M.D.;
• Continued growth of the pulmonary hypertension program.
